Ghana is in West Africa, bordered by Burkina Faso to the North, Cote d’Ivoire to the West, Togo to the East, and the Gulf of Guinea to the South. The country’s capital, Accra, is on Longitude 0° of the Greenwich Meridian. Ghana has a total land area of 238,533 sq km, stretching 672km North-South and 536km East-West. The country boasts many natural resources such as Gold, Oil, Diamond, Bauxite, Manganese, Timber, and Cocoa. The coastal area consists of plains and lagoons near river estuaries, while the north is dominated by savanna and scrub vegetation, and the South is an extensive rainforest. Ghana is also home to the second-largest artificial lake in the world, Lake Volta, which is navigable over some 400km.
Ghana has a population of 20.7 million, with a density of 79.3 people per km. The country is divided into 16 regions, with the highest population density in urban and cocoa-producing areas. Ghana has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 21-32 C (70-90 F), two rainy seasons (March-July and September-October), and a dry season that varies throughout the country. The official language of Ghana is English, and over 100 Ghanaian languages are spoken, with Hausa being widely used.
The principal ethnic groups in Ghana are Akan, Guans, Ewes, Dagombas, Gas, Gonjas, Walas, and Frafras.
