🌍 Volunteer Spotlight: Emma’s Life-Changing Experience at Ryvanz-Mia Childcare, Ghana.

Who I Am

My name is Emma, a 20-year-old Youth Work student from Adelaide, South Australia. In December 2017, I embarked on a 23-day volunteer journey at Ryvanz-Mia Childcare (Orphanage) in Kpando, Ghana.
Driven by my passion for humanitarian work, I wanted to understand what life is like for those who are not as privileged as most people in developed countries.

My Experience at Ryvanz-Mia Childcare

As part of my volunteer program, the orphanage provided me with three daily meals and comfortable on-site accommodation. Living at the orphanage gave me the opportunity to experience authentic Ghanaian life—no hotels, no air-conditioning, just simple living, community, and shared joy.

During the day, while the children were at school, I participated in everyday activities such as:

  • Tie-dye making and crafts 🎨
  • Peeling plantains and de-shelling peanuts 🌰
  • Hand-washing clothes and preparing food 🍲

These activities helped sustain the orphanage’s operations and built a sense of teamwork and purpose.

When the children returned from school, I helped them with their homework, focused on those who struggled, and encouraged peer learning. I also read to the younger ones, improved their English, played games, sang, and danced together.
The children were affectionate, curious, and full of life. Their love and laughter were the most rewarding parts of my experience.

Community Involvement

Beyond the orphanage, I had the chance to volunteer at a nearby school and at St. Patrick’s Hospital in Kpando.
At the school, I joined classroom lessons and worked alongside teachers. At the hospital, I offered moral support to patients, observed the nurses and doctors, and learned about the health challenges facing many Ghanaian families.

Exploring Ghana’s Beauty

During my stay, I explored some of Ghana’s most beautiful and spiritual places.
I visited local markets, attended an Anglican church service, and hiked through lush green forests to reach the Wli Waterfalls in Hohoe—a breathtaking experience! I also traveled by boat across Volta Lake to visit a remote island community, met friendly locals, and even danced at a traditional wedding.

These adventures revealed Ghana’s cultural richness and strengthened my love for its people and landscapes.

What I Learned

The people of Ghana are incredibly friendly, generous, and faith-driven. As a volunteer, I always felt safe and valued.
More importantly, I learned to appreciate simplicity, humility, and the power of community. This journey helped me grow—personally, spiritually, and professionally—as I prepare for a career in youth work.

“You will learn about Ghana, its economy, its social life—and about yourself.”
